RACING NEWS & VIEWS

Four Figure Offer Declined The Canterbury owned Royal Tan by Royal Chief, who has just returned to Riccarton from a trip to Australia, is to be prepared for the N.Z. Derby, to be run this month. Recently his owner, Mr G. Lang, refused an offer for the three year old, so evidently assesses him highly. He Ran to Form The Wanganui jumper, Master Francis, selected by keen sportsmen during the past few weeks as likely to account for the Waikato Hack Cup, of £9OO, ran true to form at Cambridge even on the heavy track, and fully justified the opinion of his supporters. This Francis Drake—No Humbug gelding is a very competent jumper and was confidently ridden by J. Chaplin who was associated with the victories of Brookby Song during the winter.

Change of Location The Foxbridge—Belle Star filly, Belle Zorra, hitherto trained at New Plymouth, has joined George Cobb’s team at Matamata. In four starts last season she registered one first and two seconds, proving she has galloping ability.

Verdant For Riccarton The Te Aroha trained Verdant is to represent the Auckland Province in the C.J.C. Steward’s Handicap. In August last he ran prominently for six furlongs in the Winter Cup. He gets away from the barrier quickly, and if in the pink of form on the day will keep the speedsters busy.

The Alison Cup With acceptances for the Alison Cup, one mile and three furlongs, to be run at Ellerslie on November 9, Lord Chancellor heads the list with 9.9. He has not shown any form this season. Balgowan right in the boom last month is nicely in with 8.9 and Royal Charter should be right in the fight with 7.11.

First Appearance in North The Foxbridge—Lady Tiff five year old Tifox, who for two seasons has been racing in the Wellington district, is now a member of the Cobb stable at Matamata. He'made his first appearance with the colours up at the Rotorua fixture, and acted as runner-up to Race Lad in the Masters Handicap. He is likely to go one better in the near future.

Leading Three Year Olds The meeting of the high grade three year olds, Majesty and Howe, is being keenly awaited by many sortsmen. Both are speedy milers, and the main factor in a contest may be whether it is to be on a left or right-handed course.

Race Happenings The Coronach representative Leigh Barton, from Southland, was made first choice for the Wainui Handicap at the Wellington fixture. In the running his saddle slipped, and he was duly steadied up. On the second day the saddle was properly attended to and the horse won the Awatea Handicap by five lengths. For the Wellington Handicap a lot of money went into the machine in support of Golden Souvenir. The heavy track and the fact that two horses fell in front of him brought about his defeat.
