“SCHOOLMARM” FROM AMERICA
QUESTIONED ABOUT AL CAPONE
A soft-voiced American woman of 47, who likes ancient history and Egyptian lore, has a taste for mystery novels, and knows quite a lot about A 1 Capone, stood before a class of English girls and wondered rather nervously how they’d like her.
“Schoolmarm” Miss Ann Donoghue, from Cicero, Illinois, was starting work at the Bedford Street Girls’ School, Crewe. Thousands of miles away Miss Hilda Thorndyke, the teacher she had “relieved” was finding her way round Lincoln School, Cicero—and wondering if her English accent was too noticeable.
More than the geography Miss Donoghue is teaching her 11-year-old pupils want to know: “Do you know any of the film stars?
“Do they really have gangsters in Chicago? “Do they all have lovely dresses there?” . . .
Their teacher, fresh from a reception by the mayor, and rather surprised by English summer weather, has been doing her best with the answers.
