Speeding at Taneatua
"I think it is disgusting the speed at which some people travel at Taneatua," said Cr McGougan at the last meeting of the Whakatane County Council. The Council was discussing a proposal to extend the speed 'limit of 30 m.-p.h. along the State Highway towards Waimana as far as the Railway Road. On the motion of Cr McCready it was decided to adopt this procedure, the Chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) commenting that the Chief Traffic Inspector had promised to visit the district and inspect the locality.
Disconcerting Incident A very disconcerting incident for the owner of a certain suitcase occurred in the Strand on Friday. A Maori was strolling along the pavement nonchalently swinging a small suitcase in one hand. He obviously hadn't a care in the world, and was thinking only of the immediate future. Suddenly the lock of the suitcase sprung open, the- lid flopped down, and two bottles of that which the Waitemata Harbour allegedly consists, crashed out on to the footpath. One landed and exploded like an atom bomb (no casualties), whilst the other remained in one piece. Unconcernedly the Maori stooped and picked up the bottle still intact, and replacing .it, fastened the case and walked off as if nothing had happened. But we noticed that although the case was still swung nonchalently, it was swung much more carefully.
