WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

TANEATUA MEETING

ITEMS BY CHILDREN

The October meeting of the Taneatua Women's Institute was held in the hall supper room, Mrs Gardner presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship, played by June Gardner. Mrs K. Tebbutt, a new member, was welcomed.

The roll call was "Impromptu Speeches" and was very well responded to. Subjects were drawn from a hat and covered a wide range both grave and gay. Members were keenly interested in a demonstration by Mrs Hill of a bowl of flowers for a dining table. Entertainment for the afternoon

was provided by the children who had worked up all the items entirely on their.own. A play entitled "The Sewing Circle" was acted by Josephine Brown, Lolita Ducker, Esther Ducker, Dawn Shaw, June Bluett and Basil Kempton. This was very well acted and much enjoyed. Little Gail Gardner danced a Hula and pianoforte solos were played by Pauline. Davies, Dawn Mitchell and Carol Eagle. A folk dance by Pauline Davies, Dawn Mitchell, Carol Eagle and June Gardner was very well performed.

At the conclusion of the items Mrs Gardner thanked the children on behalf of the members and visitors for the very enjoyable programme they had provided. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mesdames Santon, Merrie and Hayward.

Competitions resulted as follows: Best laundered tablecloth, Mrs Kempton 1, Mrs Hurle 2. Best marmalade, Mrs Kempton 1, Mrs Tebbutt 2. Best flower, Mrs Tebbutt 1, Mrs McDonald 2. Drama Circle

A very pleasant evening was spent by members of the Taneatua Women's Institute Drama Circle when a visit was paid to the home of Mrs F. Peebles recently. Mrs Gardner presided.

Routine business was dealt with, after which there were two play readings. The rest of the evening was spent in an old-fashioned singsong round the piano with Mrs Peebles as accompanist. Supper was served and concluded the evening. Gardening Circle

Members of the Taneatua Women's Institute Gardening Circle spent a very pleasant afternoon when they met at Mrs Oliver's residence for their October meeting. Mrs Hayward presided.

A reading on "Work in the Flower Garden in October" was given points mentioned being Chrysanthemums and their culture, michelmas daisies, delphiniums and their propagation, and the raising of seedlings.

A competition arranged by the hostess "Jumbled names of Flowers" was won by Mrs Gardner. Those present enjoyed a stroll round the gardens and spacious lawn.
