WHAKATANE BOWLING CLUB

WET WEATHER SPOILS OPENING

Wet weather marred the opening day of the Whakatane Bowling Club which took place at the club's greens at Apanui last Saturday.. Although the initial ceremony of declaring the season open was carried out, the downpour which commenced shortly after 3 p.m. made further play impossible, and matches were cangelled when only half complete. There was a good attendance of members, whilst a number of friends and visitors were also present. The President, Mr P. Dixon, declared the season open, and Mrs J. W. Wilson, wife of the Club Vicepresident, rolled up the first jack. The first bowl was then played by Mr G. Caisley the longest standing member of the club.

A tasty afternoon tea was served by the ladies present. The scores of the incompleted games were- as under : W. Smith, W. Howat, Rixon and Middlemas (s) 6 drew with Anstis, Mollgaard, Carling and Currah ' (s) 6; Bullot, Good, Coates and Hunt (s) 9 beat McGill, Head, Smoljan and W. Harris (s) 8;, Mayer, J. Murphy, Brown and Lawn (s) ,5 beat Sims, Dainton, Wilson and Burgess (s) 4; R. B. Gerring, Compton, Salmon and Caisley (s) 10 beat Bradshaw, Spong, Bigelow and W. G. Howat 8; R. F.
