Taneatua Footpaths

The subject of the Taneatua footpaths came before the Whakatane County Council once again at its last meeting, when the Engineer (Mr C. H. Brebner) reported that he had received a letter from the Public Works Engineer, Tauranga, to the effect that with certain provisos concerning construction, the work could be put in hand as soon as the cement position allowed. The letter pointed out that the Main Highways Board subsidy of £1 for £1 applied only to a 6ft. path, and that if the Council wished to construct a 12ft. one, the cost of extra width would have to be borne by the Council. Detailed estimates for both blocks were: No. 1 Block (6ft.)—£l9B; No. 2 Block (Business,» 12ft.)—£396, making a total cost of £594. If it was decided to proceed with No. 1 block, the letter concluded, the work could be gone on with as soon as the change in locality had the Highways Board's approval, and an ad-' ditiohal subsidy secured for the business block next year. The Council decided to refer the question of additional footpaths or crossings at applicants' costs to .Cr McCready and the County .Engineer for report.
