LABOUR WEEKEND SPORT

AN IMPOSING programme of sport is furnished by the various organisations in the Whakatane district for the forthcoming Labour Day weekend. The Whakatane Golf Club with its links now in perfect condition is once again promoting its annual tourney which will bring competitors from all parts of the province. The Bowling Club officially declares its season opened on Saturday (tomorrow), and this event will be followed by a popular tournament on Monday. Hockey which this year has been in the ascendent in this district, has sponsored a special field day and inter-club tournament at Te Teko, while the Whakatane Gun Club will hold a special ‘shoot’ on its newly acquired property at Paroa. In the latter instance we note the improvement which has been made in the grounds and the erection of the Clubhouse. The Cricket season will also make its bow to the sporting public in ringing up the curtain on the new season 1946. Matches will take place between Taneatua and Edgecumbe at Taneatua and United and Paroa at Te Teko. Besides the above a large number of smaller events have been planned to take place and the present occupation of seventy-five per cent, of the town’s population seems to be keeping fingers crossed against the weather.
