Brilliancy The Defaulter —Citoyenne four-year-old Derene, won the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, at the Timaru meeting, beating a field of 16 in 1.11 2-ssecs. This is the most brilliant sprint so far this season, and she will be watched in her near future engagements. The Marcourt Stakes The Bulandshar mare, Soneri, has now accounted for five races in succession. She is now in the boom for the Harcourt Stakes, in which she may meet Golden Souvenir. If so it should be a very fast mile and a quarter. For the Hunt Cup Although pulled up during the running of the Steeplechase at Ellerslie, and brought back to the birdcage somewhat lame, Aga Kay is booked to contest the Hunt Cup at Cambridge on Labour Day. He will be better suited to the left-handed track. An Auckland Cup Winner Foxwyn’s second to Sleepy Fox in the Shorts Handicap has tended to bring him into prominence for big events in the holiday season. He has already won an Auckland Cup, and this year with its big prize money it will be well worth winning. A New Secretary Consequent upon the resignation of Mr W. Webb as Secretary to the Bay of Plenty Racing Club, Mr T. V. R. O’Halloran has been appointed to the position. Nomination of Verdent The Te Aroha trained Verdent is in the Harcourt Stakes at 9.4. He is not particularly partial to weight, and cannot be counted upon as a certain starter. A Question of Weight Mr N. E. Fitzgerald has nominated both Kindergarten and Golden Souvenir for the New Zealand Cup, and great interest is being taken in the assessment of the handicapper for this particular pair. Some experts are of the opinion that Kindergarten will be called upon to concede has half-brother about five pounds in weight. The probability, however, is that they will be assessed practically on even terms. The champion is not thoroughly sound while Golden Souvenir, a horse of sound constitution, won the event last year with the maximum weight of 9.7 he will be well in. . For Malaya Jockeys W. S. Bagby and L. H. Clifford leave this month for Malaya, where they will apply for riding licenses. Waikato Hunt Club The Wanganui horses Master Francis and Lambro are to be among the contestants at Cambridge on Labour Day. Both are well forward in respect to racing condition. Wintex-set for N.Z. When trainer A. Winder returns to New Zealand with Lord Barwon, he will also bring the famous Australian Steeplechaser, Winterset, who is intended for jumping contests next autumn and winter.
