VISIT TO TE AROHA

LOCAL YOUNG CALEDONIANS

POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT

At the invitation of Chief N. G. MacLeod of the Te Aroha Caledonian Society, Clan MacLeod, of the Whakatane Young Caledonians Club, numbering 27 in all, journeyed to Te Aroha over the weekend. The trip was arranged with the idea of illustrating what young people could do within the scope of Senior Caledonian Societies.

The Whakatane representatives, headed by Chief George Paterson, and Chieftain Bill Abbott provided the whole programme, and received enthusiastic applause for all items. The choruses .were especially popular, Miss Dorothy Stewart taking the lead in most instances. Two plays were provided: “Flora MacDonald’s Farewell to Prince Charlie” and “Army Alphabet,” both of which Whakatane audiences are already conversant with. Individual solos and instrumental items were also carried out, Mrs A. Stewart acting as accompanist. An interesting magical interlude was given by Roy Addison. During the supper interval, the Chiefs of the Paeroa, Morrinsville and Matamata Societies expressed their appreciation of the programme, and indicated that the same idea would probably be introduced in their respective centres, in order to stimulate interest in the Caledonian affairs.

During the weekend, all members of the Clan were billeted in various homes, and many friendships were made. On Sunday a trip was made to the top of the bald spur on Te Aroha mountain, whilst on the way home a halt was called at Okuia Springs, Matamata, where everyone indulged in a popular swim. The whole outing can be classed as a splendid success, and it is hoped that it will be the forerunner to many others of a similar nature.
