TECHNICAL TRAINING

ELECTRICAL CLASSES PROJECTED NEED FOR ACCOMMODATION At the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee, Mr F. Clarke stressed once again, the urgent need for accommodation for the trade training classes which were being organised in the town. The woodwork classes, he said, appeared to be well catered for, but the mechanics’ class was apt to be neglected. For two years now, it had been carrying on with no permanent place in which to store equipment. Further to this, Mr Clarke added that the local branch of the Electrical Institute, was proposing to start a class for electrical . instruction, whilst there was also a plumbing class projected. There were, he said, probably more boys who entering the trades, than the clerical professions, and they must be catered for. His suggestion was that if one room could be acquired, the three classes could all make use of it. The Headmaster (Mr I. B. Hubbard), he concluded, had agreed to assist with instruction in mathematics.

The Chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson) said that at the moment he did not see how anything could be done. Next year, however, when the new rooms were ready for use, it would be up to the committee to endeavour to do something by way of supplying accommodation for the trades classes.
