POPULAR DANCES HELD
S kitchen evening
A large number of friends attended 4 kitchen evening held •in the Thornton Hall recently, in honour of Miss;' Charlotte Newton who is shortly to wed Mr Bob Butler. The evening was spent in dancing, a number of local personalities supplying the music. Mr Jackson, who acted as Master of Ceremonies, expressed, during an approprate interval, the feelings of the gathering when he wished the guests of honour the best of luck, and asked them to accept the many useful gifts which had been presented. Mr Butler replied suitably. Gymnasium Dance A successful dance was sponsored by the Whakatane Gymnasium Club in the Caledonian Hall last Friday evening, a good crowd of dancers from country and town attending. The Premier Band supplied music, whilst Mr Sonny Moore was M.C. During the evening, an excellent supper was served. Highlights of the function were the £1 Monte Carlo and the two competitions. The former was won by Miss C. Stephenson and partner, while Messrs. A. Headland B. Johnston were the lucky winners of the latter. Miss Dorothy Stewart played a popular extra. National Party Dance The Maori Branch of the National Party held a well attended dance at Te Teko recently. The Rhythm Vendors supplied music befitting their title, and Mr Johnny Keepa filled the bill of Master of Ceremonies. During the evening, a Hangi sup r per which proved to be a very popufeature with the crowd, was served. It is understood that the other two dances in the same group which were to have taken place at Poroporo and Ruatoki have been postponed, and fresh dates will be advertised later. Tennis Club Opening The opening of St. George’s Tennis Club, Whakatane, took place on Saturday afternoon last, club members being well represented. Each player was able to take part in several sets and the first of what will undoubtedly be many days of enjoyable tennis was counted as being an unqualified success. During the afternoon, a delightful afternoon tea was served by the lady members, the refreshment making a very welcome interlude. The men’s competition was won by Mr McCrae, whilst Miss Margaret Howat won the ladies prize. For the commencement of the season, play was of a high standard, and the enthusiasm shown by the players will doubtless ensure the success of the season.
