WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT THORNTON The monthly meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute held on Thursday, October 10, was well attended. Mrs Robb presided and welcomed two new members who were enrolled. After singing the Institute song, all present stood for one minute as a silent tribute to the memory of a member who had passed away during the month and as a mark of sympathy to two other bereaved members. Correspondence was read and two delegates appointed to attend the biennial Council meeting. Mrs Goodwin read a report of the gardening circle meetings. A presentation was made to one of the younger members, Miss Charlotte Newton, who is shortly to be married. With appropriate words Mrs Robb said that the gift carried with it the goodwill of the Institute and best wishes for a long and happy married life. A humorous dialogue read by two members of the Drama Circle caused much amusement. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with the National Anthem. The competition winners were as follows: Best flower, Miss Schneller 1; Mrs Robb 2. Best vegetable, Mrs Watts 1; Mrs Bell 2. Cotton dress, Mrs McDonald 1; Mrs Watts 2. Billy loaf, Mrs Ducker 1; Mrs Smith 2. Hat trimmed with vegetables, Mrs Ducker 1; Mrs Branch 2.
