NATIONAL’S CANDIDATE
MR W. SULLIVAN, M.P
RECORD OF SERVICE At the forthcoming election, Mr W. Sullivan, the sitting member for Bay of Plenty, exMayor of Whakatane and prominent local body member and businessman will once again . contest the seat in the interests of the National Party. Known throughout the Bay for his readiness to assist all and sundry as far as his Parliamentary duties are concerned, his accessability and his fairness in dealing with all things personal and political, Mr Sullivan needs no
further introduction through these columns.
Suffice it is to say that since coming here from Taranaki some 32 years ago he has gained great prominence in the business world, has served continuously on the Whakatane Borough Council since 1925; has enjoyed thirteen years as Mayor, an office which he. relinquished in 1938, and has represented this constituancy since the by-election in 1941. Since that date also Mr Sullivan has gained considerable prominence in the political arena, and is one of the most quoted members of-his party. Mr Sullivan commenced his- political career in 1932 when as an In.dependent he unsuccessfully contested the Tauranga seat against the late Mr C. E. MacMillan. In 1938 he contested the Bay of Plenty seat against the sitting member, the late Lieut. A. G. Hultquist. On that occasion he was defeated by a margin of 169 votes, the result being: Hultquist 4964, Sullivan 4795. The byelection in 1941 caused by the death in action of Lieut. Hultquist, saw Mr Sullivan again standing'for National against Mr C. Mill whomjhe defeated handsomely by a margin of 1651 votes, the result being: Sullivan 4675, Mill 3024. At the last election (1943) Labour produced a candidate in MrW- Jonasen who was defeated by Mr Sullivan by a margin of 1669 votes. The poll results on that occasion were: Sullivan 5313, Jonasen 3644. From the above it will be seen that Mr Sullivan has i shown a steadily improving position as far as the electors are concerned.
The Bay of Plenty has produced -ifa clean record as far as elections are 'concerned and has been singularly iortunate in the choice and type of its candidates for all sections of political belief. With the two candidates who'will now face the electors during the next few weeks we need have no fears, but that the same high standard of clean, hard campaigning will be observed, and we congratulate them both on the democratic spirit which has prompted them to proffer their services in the interests of' the public of this electorate.
