A GENUINE PLEASURE

SHOPPING FOR FOOD

WELSH BRIDE IN AMERICA

At least one North Carolina resident finds shopping for food these days a pleasant chore. She is Mrs John Aldridge, the former Miss Patricia Williams of Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales. At present Mrs Aldridge is working as a secretary in the Statistics Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture .while her husband, a native of Salem, attends North Carolina State College.

Mrs Aldridge arived in America in March aboard the liner Queen Mary along with 2000 British war brides and babies. Mrs Aldridge says she occupied quarters on the vessel which were once occupied by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Mrs Aldridge is particularly impressed with the grocery stores in the United States.

“After England, with its almost total lack of fresh fruits, milk and eggs, the Raleigh stores are like a fairy wonderland,” she said. In England, she pointed out, every housewife" is assigned to a grocer and butcher, with whom she registers. If she fails to find what she wants there, that’s the end of the search. Under British law, she is not alowed to shop around as are her American counterparts. Mrs Aldridge was with the ATS in England and rose to the rank of warrant officer. She met her husband in Plymouth, England.
