CRICKET
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS OPENING DAY DRAW A full representation of delegates from the cricket clubs of the district met for the last meeting of the Management Committee of the Whakatane Cricket Association. General business dealt mainly with the draw for the first round of the Collins Shield, opening day (October 27) games being as follows: —Waimana v P. and T. at Waimana; United v Paroa (ground to be arranged); Taneatua v Edecumbe at Edgecumbe. In order that play might be commenced on October 20, it was decided to hold practice games on that date as follows: Paroa v Edgecumbe at Te Teko; Taneatua v Waimana at Waimana; United v P. and T. (ground to be ai’ranged).
Discussion centred round the prospects of forming a local Umpires’ Association, and it was decided to call upon all ex-cricketers and others interested to forward their names, to the Secretary towards this end. It was pointed out that such an Association was urgently needed if cricket was to prosper in this district.
