MENACE OF WRECK
AMMUNITION SHIP SUNK An ammunition ship sent to the bottom of the Firth of Clyde by a U-boat torpedo in 1942 is threatening thousands of residents and holiday makers along the Scottish cost. The ship’s holds were packed with thousands of tons of R.A.F. bombs, munitions, detonators, and weapons for the Far East. Much of it was in airtight boxes, which are floating to the surface and drifting with the tide on to the .shores of the Mull of Kintyre and the holiday isles of Arran and Bute. Although more than 90 per cent, of the buoyant material is harmless, there is a small percentage which is extremely dangerous. Among this lethal flotsam are several boxes of anti-tank fuses which were blown into the water at Loch Ryan when the explosion occurred at a military dump, killing eight soldiers. Three boxes of these fuses have been foundTlt is expected there will be more.
