INDOOR BASKETBALL

BAY CHAMPIONSHIPS TAURANGA WINS CONTESTS

A large crowd of spectators and supporters attended at the Winter Show Buildings on Saturday afternoon and evening when the Bay of Plenty Indoor Basketball Championships were held. Teams from Whakatane, Te Puke, Tauranga and Rotorua took part, and the whole contest was one of thrills and excitement for both players and spectators.

Whakatane was well represented with four men’s teams and - four ladies the Men’s A reaching the finals. Altogether 16 matches were contested during the day. The knock-out games were played in two 10 minute spells, whilst the men’s finals were contested in 4 periods of the same length. The ladies’ finals were played in 4 7minute spells. The breaks which were of very short duration gave just enough time for teams to change any players they wished. Throughout the day a loud speaker system was in operation and the various points and infringements explained to the spectators, many of whom were witnessing their first game of Indoor Basketball. During the finals a running commentary outlined the course of the game and the various players in action. Finals In the ladies’ final, Tauranga A met Te Puke in a sparkling display. The Tauranga girls showed a slightly more practiced combination, and their almost faultless, handling and accurate shooting gave them the necessary advantage.
