Trapping of Eels
■ Using a'specially designed trap, the South Taranaki Acclimatisation Society plans an intensive campaign against eels, recognised by anglers in the district as the worst menace to the survival of young-trout. The society’s purpose is to purge streams of as many eels as possible before further liberations of trout fingerlings. The trap is of an experimental nature, but it is designed on the lines of traps used successfully in former times by the Maoris. It is of light steel construction, weighs about 301 b., and is estimated to-cost £1 10s. If it is considered successful after a trial sufficient traps will be constructed to place in all South Taranaki trout streams seriously affected by eels.
