PARACHUTED FROM JET PLANE
SPEED OF MORE THAN 300 M.P.H. SPECIAL EJECTION DEVICE A man has been successfully ejected from a jet-propelled Meteor aircraft for the first time in history. A levei\ exploded a charge under the ejection seat and Irishborn Bernard Lynch, *of County Meath, was shot out of the plane when it was travelling at more than 300 m.p.h., 8000 ft. above Oxfordshire. Captain Scott, attached to Power Jets Experimental Unit, piloted the plane. The passenger, by pulling the lever, releases two parachutes, one for himself and one for the seat.
In clear weather, and in the presence of observers from the United States Army and Navy and Chiefs of the Air Ministry, Mr Lynch was ejected over Chalgrove R.A.F. station.'
He landed unharmed between two buildings on the edge of the aerodrome.
Mr Lynch is employed by the Martin Baker Company. He proposes to celebrate his jump by returning to Eire to get married.
The test was the culmination of three months’ experimental work by a special unit stationed in Oxfordshire.
