PUBLIC TENNIS COURTS

PUBLIC opinion will be strongly behind the move now being made to construct public tennis courts in the town. Last night’s meeting has once again served to indicate the growing need for such facilities, which can be numbered amongst many other very average features Whakatane lacks. For too long the town has been content to drag along with semiprivately owned courts sponsored by the Churches. These have served an excellent purpose, but with a population of 3000 now in the Borough, -it is something of an indictment that we have not a single public tennis court in the town. Whether or not the newly found enthusiasts will be prepared to link up with the proposal to construct a combined sports centre, capable of catering for all types of sport, in the Domain is a matter for very serious consideration. The fact however that tennis players have banded together for the purpose of getting something done, is in itself a very welcome item of news, and the efforts of the new organisation are worthy of the fullest public support.
