ROWING SEASON PREPARATIONS
IT is good to note the firm grip that the manly sport of rowing has taken upon the community since the return of men from overseas. Its re-establishment in Whakatane as a popular and useful pastime means adding considerably to the town’s attractions, more than that, it provides a pleasant health-giving recreation for the youth of the community. It is worthy of recollection now that peace rules again, that during the depths of the war, when the club had gone into recess for lack of members, and when its shed and valuable property stood in immediate danger of collapse and destruction, the citizens of Whakatane by common donation came quickly to the rescue and subscribed sufficient money to effect repairs to the shed and to recondition the boats. This gesture should in itself assure club members of the unmistakeable public interest in its activities and of the town’s unwillingness to see the sport decline in any way.
