AWAITI BRIDGE

NEW STRUCTURE NEEDED Concern was expressed by Cr Hunter at the last meeting of the Whakatane County Council, at the bad state of the Awaiti Bridge, on Railway Road West which he claimed was an eyesore to the whole of the County. The officers inspecting the Edgecumbe township, he added went to the site, and might have considered rebuilding Edgecumbe there, but for the presence of the old washed-away bridge which doubtless changed their minds! He suggested that as the Government had put a veto on concrete bridges, a decent wooden one should be erected. Cr Butler agreed, adding that something would have to be done. The Engineer (Mr C. H. Brebner) intimated that a good wooden bridge would cost in the vicinity of £SOO. Cr Hunter: We’re only beating the air if we try to get a concrete bridge. We might be ten years. The only way is to get a decent wooden one. It was resolved that application be made to the Works Department for a £1 for £1 subsidy for a wooden bridge.
