ROWING
CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING PROSPECTS FOR NEW SEASON The annual general meeting of the Whakatane Rowing Club was held in the Borough Council Chambers last Thursday evening, a large attendance of members being present. In the unavoidable absence of the Chairman, Mr Hayward, Mr Bert Norman took the chair. The financial statement which was presented showed the club to be in quite a fair financial position considering heavy expenses entailed in repairs to the shed which was damaged by a gale last season. I Election of Officers The election of officers resulted as under:— Patron: Mr R. Morpeth. President: Mr S. H. Tippett. Vice-Presidents: Messrs. T. Atkinson, Senr., R. F. Smith, B. Sladden, B. S. MacDonald, Bremner, Dr. Maaka, Boon and Fogarty. Club Captain: Mr B. Norman. Vice-Captain: Mr G. Dines. Secretary: Mr Don Stewart. Treasurer: Mr D. Debreceny. Auditor: Mr H. Morgan. Management Committee: Messrs. B. Cutler, S. Dent, G. Moore, F. Price, A. Head, W. Rivett, D. Wilson. Selection Committee: Messrs. B. Norman, S. Dent and G. Dines. Opening of Season It was decided that the opening date should be left in the hands of the Management Committee. Subscriptions Subscriptions were fixed at 35/for senior members and 25/~ for junior, reducable by 10/- if paid by December. The secretary put forward the suggestion that as several country members who could not take a full part in activities wished to join the club, a special reduced subscription be introduced for their benefit. Mr R. Morpeth pointed out that difficulties would be encountered unless the rights of such members were properly outlined. It was decided that to meet the situation, reductions of 10/- in the respective subscriptions should be made, and that the Management Committee should go into the question of listing the activities available to these members.
A scheme put forward by Mr B. Cutler concerned the extending of rowing facilities to school boys. The idea, he said, had originated last year, and it had been decided to leave it to the 1946-47 committee to go into the proposal. The proposal was that sdhool boys should be admitted to the club on a subscription of 2/6. During school hours equipment would be made available under the supervision of one of the masters. Out of school hours, the boys would be regarded as normal members of the club. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the committee.
Mr R. Morpeth asked whether the club had applied for the Government subsidy due for work done. The Club Captain explained that this would be forwarded within the next- few days. The suggestion was made that the Trial Fours day should be held on Saturday instead of Sunday. The Club Captain stated that this proposal was to be considered by the committee at an early meeting.
It was resolved to continue admitting honorary members to the club under the same conditions as last year.
