LAYOUT OF OHOPE

“TOWN-PLANNING” THE BEACH

COUNTY COUNCIL’S PROPOSAL

In order to avoid the anomaly which has arisen at Edgecumbe, the Whakatane County Council at its last meeting decided to take steps to see what action could be taken to “town-plan”

Ohope Beach. The matter was introduced by Cr H. C. McCready, who said that the risk of Ohope being placed in the same position as Edgecumbe at present, could not be taken, and some plan of future development should be obtained from the P.W.D. It would be very fortunate to allow building to proceed, and then to find that the whole layout had to be altered.

Cr Luxton agreed, instancing other seaside resorts which consisted mainly of ‘an awful jumble of shops and houses.’ The Chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) : I think we will probably have to do something about it ourselves. The Council resolved that the Clerk should go into the matter, and report what action could be taken.
