Divorce in New Zealand
In the last 10 years New Zealand’s
divorce rate has more than doubled. Last year’s decrees absolute totalled 1725 compared with 653 in 1935, a 163 per cent, increase. More than 40 per cent, of last year’s petitions were on the grounds of separation for three years or over. More petitions were entered by husbands than wives. The number of children affected by last year’s divorce was 2903 an average of 1.13 per petition. This seems to attest the truth of the assertion that a sizeable family is the best guarantee of the marriage bond.
