WOMENS INSTITUTE

EDGECUMBE’S SEPTEMBER MEETING The September meeting of the Edgecumbe Women’s Institute was held in the Presbyterian Hall, Mrs Pearse presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. The afternoon commenced with a preview of the play that members of the Drama Club are to present at the forthcoming Festival. The play “Anti-Clockwise” was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the players are to be congratulated on their work. It was pleasing to note new members taking part. At the conclusion, Mrs Pearse presented each played with a dainty posy. The usual business B was then dealt with.- The garden party in October will be held at the residence of Mrs Crang. The roll call brought* forth many good Household Hints. As it was “Exchange of programme” day with Otakiri, Mrs Armstrong then took the chair. Singing by the choir was very much enjoyed. A recitation by Mrs Carr and a short sketch by Mrs Carr and Mrs Armstrong were very amusing. While everyone was in jolly mood, a novelty competition, making a set of false teeth with plastercine and peanuts was held. Quite, a lot of gnashing'of teeth was done before Mrs Blair’s set was judged the best. Another novelty competition was making a giraffe from a sheet of newspaper. Short necks and short legs and long tails were amongst the monsters produced, the prize for the best attempt going to Mrs Mayo. After a very enjoyable afternoon tea, a pleasant afternoon was brought 1 to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. Monthly competition results were as follows:—Three freezias, Mrs Colebrook 1; Mrs Burgess 2; Mrs H. Carter 3. Best flower, Mrs Learning 1; Mrs Pearse and Mrs King 2; Mrs Hodson 3. Three jars jam, Mrs Newbigen 1; Mrs King 2; Mrs H. Carter 3. Gent’s buttonhole, Mrs H. Carter 1; Mrs Smith 2; Mrs Pearse 3. Cabbage, Mrs Pearse 1; Mrs Burgess 2.
