DISORDERLY CONDUCT

TWO MAORIS CHARGED SEQUEL TO FIGHT Sequel to a drunken fight in which two Maoris were involved was heard in the Whakatane Court last Monday before Messrs. C. G. Lucas and C. S. Armstrong, J.P.s, when Tom Wahaponga Kingi and Pat Hohua of Ruatoki were jointly charged with disorderly behaviour in Tuhoe Street, Taneatua, while drunk. A second charge of fighting was withdrawn. Sergeant Farrell stated that Hohua had been drinking in the Taneatua Hotel with his three brothers when Kingi came in and dragged him outside. A fight ensued in which Hohua had his hand bitten before the two were separated. Both men explained to the court that they had been drinking, and that the fight had resulted through the liquor each had had.. Kingi was sentenced to 14 days in the Whakatane gaol, the Bench commenting that accused had a list of previous convictions. In the case of Hohua, who had one previous conviction, one week’s imprisonment was the sentence.
