Samurai Sword
A Samurai sword today adorns a wall in New Zealand Army Headquarters, Wellington. It is the property of Lieutenant-Colonel L. W. Thornton, who acquired it- while acting as liaison officer between General MacArthur and LieutenantGeneral J. Northcott, then in command of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan. Colonel Thornton said no money could have bought the sword in Japan, because it carried the family honour and traditions with it. Rather than 6 that it should be captured, the owners gave it to him. The sword is claimed to be 600 years old.
