PETROL TAX
SHOULD BE EASED MR W. SULLIVAN’S CONTENTIONS The Government should give serious consideration to altering the whole system of allocating the revenue derived from petrol and tyre taxation and registrations, declared W. Sullivan (National, Bay of Plenty) when discussing the Estimates in the House of Representatives. Mr Sullivan said that the total taxation on petrol amounted to more than 1/2 a gallon. A tax of 4d a gallon had been imposed before the war, and went into the Consolidated Fund, and there had been an increase of 4d a gallon since, for war purposes. He realised that it would take a considerable sum of money to bring the highways back to their pre-war standard but an alteration in the allocation of revenue should be considered. The request of the motor unions that the war tax of 4d should be abolished was fair and just. Mr Sullivan said he also supported the request that the Government should waive the sales tax on heavy motor vehicles.
