“The Morgue”
‘The Morgue’ is the somewhat callous term applied to one of the outbuildings at the Whakatane High School at present being used for a classroom. The building bearing this rather unelevating nick-name consists of a converted shelter shed, and with the concrete floor which it formerly had (a new wooden floor has since been built in ), it was certainly anything but a cosy, congenial workroom. But that was not the reason it was given its strange title. During the months when the Japanese armies were steadily fighting their way towards the South Pacific, and the E.P.S. was a strong organisation, the school buildings, we understand, were listed as an emergency hospital. The outbuilding we refer to, it was thought, (chiefly in humorous vein) would make an excellent morgue. Apparently the name has stuck.
