ENGLAND’S ELMS
THREATENED BY DISEASE The English countryside may be changed in appearance unless scientists can stop the spread of a disease which is killing off elm trees. Elm disease came to England 50 years ago in nursery stock from Holland, and for the past 10 years it has been increasing.
Worcestershire County Agricultural Committee has told the Forestry Commission that the disease is becoming a menace in its area, and an official of the Commission said : “If the elm dies out it will be a serious thing, for no other tree can take its place.”
