TECHNICAL TRAINING

MECHANICS CLASS l NEED FOR ACCOMMODATION Accommodation for the mechanics class which has been operating in Whakatane for some considerable time was the subject of a discussion, at the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee. The question was introduced when the chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson) asked whether it would be possible to do away with the building known as ‘the j morgue’ as a schoolroom now that extra accommodation was being . supplied. The Headmaster (Mr I. B. Hubbard) stated that at present it was difficult to tell whether or not it would be needed. A better indication would be obtained when the roll numbers for the commencement of the 1947 school year were obtained. He added that if it were not to be used as a classroom, it would make a very good art room where pupils could pursue this type of study without the trouble of clearing away everything after the period had finished. A special type of desk was used for art work. Mr W. Whittaker stated that he had been approached several times by Mr O’Rourke, who was in charge of the mechanics’ training class to see if there were any possibility of obtaining ‘the morgue’ as a permanent home for his group. A place was urgently needed where demonstrational equipment could be housed. This was not exceptionally bulky, but it was quite valuable-

Mr F. Clarke added that he would like to see the mechanics’ class held at the school, and if a plumbing class were instituted, the two could probably quite well work in together.

The chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson) said that he thought an endeavour should definitely be made to have the two technical classes located at the school.

It was decided to inform Mr O’Rourke that the committee would do its best to obtain a room for his class next year.
