SCHOOL RIFLE RANGE
QUESTION OF REMOVAL . A POSSIBLE DANGER A discussion at the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee centred round the question of the removal of the miniature rifle range in the school grounds, used by the school cadet corps for practice in shooting. Following the decision made at a previous meeting to have the range removed on account of its possible danger, the committee was in receipt of further information from the Army authorities.
The Headmaster (Mr I. B. Hubbard) stated that he had spoken to the Area Officer concerning the matter and had been informed that arrangements were being made to have it shifted out of the grounds. This, however, would not mean that the school would lose it.
The chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson): It would be a pity to lose it altogether. The Sergeant-Major instructing the cadets told me that it would be lost to the school altogether if it were taken out of the grounds. The Headmaster intimated that arrangements were being made to see whether or not it could be reerected over against the hill on the other side of the Domain. In any case, he added, even if the school did lose the range it would not deprive the cadets of shooting as the boys could still use the range at the rear of Messrs. Hall and Stewart’s premises. It was decided that plans for the removal of the range should be proceeded with.
