CRICKET

whakatane united club SECRETARY’S ANNUAL REPORT At the annual meeting of the Whakatane United Cricket Club which took place recently, the following report was presented by the President, Mr J. D. Rivett:— “The club has now completed its third year, probably the three most difficult years it will experience have passed, and the future may be looked forward to with confidence. Membership Difficulty was experienced on a few occasions in fielding a full team, but this was not so bad as in the first two seasons, and no doubt easier conditions and a longer weekend will assist this aspect in the coming season. Members are again urged to pay their subscriptions promptly and to place themselves at the disposal of the committee in regard to preparation of grounds etc., and cleaning up after matches whenever possible. This has fallen on the shoulders of a very few in the. past, and in view of the William’s Cup games; apart from ordinary fixtures which are anticipated, all members should pull together and so lighten the burden and make the coming season a success. Pavilion Extensive improvements were effected in regard to the Pavilion last season. Water was laid on and a sink installed. Portion of the rear wall was cut and hinged, forming a shutter similar to the front, and this has been found to be a great improvement in extremely hot weather. A primus stove and a camp cooker were also purchased and in- - stalled. A flag pole and equipment were bought and a pennant comprising the club’s colours, was procured. At the same time uniform caps were purchased, and most of these have been taken by club members. Pitch and Ground The pitch and ground are in' a very poor state and a letter has been forwarded to the A. and P. Association in regard to playing on their ground. In view of the state of the Domain, we feel that this is the only solution. We urge the incoming committee to go into this matter immediately, in order that the new season may be with no holdups. Finance The season concluded with a credit balance of £lO 18s 7d. On perusal of the financial statement it will be seen that this is quite satisfactory. The club’s assets now amount to approximately £215, with, no liabilities.

Playing Activities

The big feature of the club’s activities during the past season was the annexing of the William’s Cup from the Te Puke Club. This cup can be challenged for by any affiliated club in the Bay of Plenty and therefore is the premier trophy for competition in the Bay of Plenty. ; The cup was successfully defended i against the Kahakura Club of Roto- ! rua last season, and the first two 1) challenges in the coming season, have been allotted to the Pongakawa Club, Te Puke, and the Old Boy’s Club, Tauranga. The club was not so successful in the local competitions as in its first two years, but emerged winners in the knock-out competition. “Allen . Cup.” Visits were paid to Opotiki and Tauranga where very enjoyable friendly games were played. It is to be hoped that these games will be continued with, in the future. During the season, four members of the . club represented the Bay of Plenty Cricket Association against Waikato, and five against Poverty Bay. In the Whakatane Association games, six members gained representative hon- xours. Social Again our thanks are extended > to the Ladies’ Committee who performed admirably whenever called on. They are perhaps the club’s greatest asset. The President, Mr J. D. Rivett, sponsored an evening held in the pavilion during June, in honour of the team which won the William’s Cup from Te Puke. This was a veryenjoyable event, and the club’s thanks are extended to the President for his kind gesture. In conclusion, we would like to - thank all non-playing members and supporters for their kind assistance and generosity during the year, and we solicit their continued support. The President, Mr J. D. Rivett, was again a tower of strength and we -hope that he will continue to hold the reins in the coming season. All members are urged to renew their activities with vigour, and prospective members are heartilywelcomed,”
