AUSTRALIAN BROOD MARES

VISIT TO LOCAL STUD For the first time in turf history a leading Australian Stud is sending high class brood mares to be served by a stallion standing in New Zea- ( land. Mr F. W. Hughes who owns the large Kooba Stud, New South Wales, has booked four highly bred mares to the Nearco horse Pictavia who is owned by Messrs. F. J. Sava'ge of Sons of the Tuhoe Stud, Waimana. The mares were leaving Sydney for New Zealand on July 25. They are all young mares by Mr Hughes’ recently deceased Hyperian horse Titan and are members of well known Australian thoroughbred famlies. They are “Euphrosyne” (Titan —Excitation), “F abledale” (Titan —Fable), “Thalia” (Titan — Australian Rose) and “Tigalante” (Titan —Galmar). This is undoubtedly the first occasion on which a leading Australian stud has. sent four mares of such quality to be served by one stallion in New Zealand and is a clear indication of the high opinion held in Australia of the value of “Pictavia” as a sire. The well known Victorian mare “Binnak Girl” (Great Star—Lady Kath) who was a good winner in Australia, has also been booked to Pictavia for the 1946 season and is expected to arrive at the end of her journey any day now.
