BASKETBALL GALA

SUCCESSFUL SPORTS DAY VARIETY ©F ENTERTAINMENT Variety of entertainment to suit all tastes, marked the Basketball Gala Day which took place at the Whakatane Domain last Saturday afternoon. A good crowd in which th,e country districts were well represented attended, and from every aspect, the day could be described as being an unqualified success, Most noticeable was the number and variety of different events which, all proceeding together, gave the whole day something of the atmosphere of a three ring circus. At one stage a Rugby match, two basketball games, and children’s flat races each claimed their share of spectators. The net result was that all who attended were treated to a thoroughly enjoyable day’s entertainment.

Basketball teams representing Whakatane, Paroa, Orini, Edgecumbe, Poroporo and Awakeri contested a tournament during the day, -and took part also in relay and novelty events. One of the highlights was a march past of teams when points were awarded on marching ■ ability. School teams also competed, -and without exception performed very creditably. The Whakatane Pipe Band which was in attendance lent a deft touch of atmosphere with a number of selections, and concluded with an •exhibition march. The familiar voice of Mr Freddie Burt hailed from the loudspeaker- and kept spectators well informed as to proceedings. .Members of the Whakatane Boys’ Brigade acted capably as runners, ■ and results were broadcast in record time. The officials who handled the •complicated programme must be warmly congratulated, for proceedings went off without a single hitch so far as the public was aware. -Miss Luttrell and Mrs Rowson acted jointly as secretaries, whilst a committee under Mr Te H; son handled the Children’s Events. These latter, may it be noted, were extremely popular with the kiddies, •and were well entered for. The points for Marching, were allotted by Corporal G. B. Mead, R.N.Z.A.F. Catering to the public taste were stalls ably conducted by a committee of ladies. A produce stall and a morning and afternoon tea stall did record business, whilst , the inimitable hangi likewise proved a strong attraction. At the conclusion of the proceedings, Mrs T. M. Grant, President of the Whakatane Basketball Association, extended thanks to the workers and to the patrons who had been responsible for the success of the day, and then presented . the various trouhies won. To the Whakatane ‘A’ team went the Phillips -Cup and the Taneatua Cup, both for weekly competitions. The Paroa team received the Whakatane Basketball Association Shield and the Ward Cup for runners-up in the weekly competition.' The Whakatane ‘A’ team received the banner for the least number of goals scored against them during the season. The ‘A’ section trophy went to Paroa, and the ‘B’' section trophy to Poroporo. Miss Luttrell presented the School Trophy to the Whakatane Primary School. A football match arranged to assist the day, between United and Te Teko junior teams was won by Te Teko by 9 points to 6. The game was well worth watching, and attracted a number of spectators. Concluding features of the event were the matches arranged between the Whakatane businessmen and the winners of the ‘A’ and ‘B’ trophies. The Bludgers to their credit gained a decisive victory over the Paroa side but luck was not with the Moaners who just failed to get the one point needed to declare their game a draw. The matches as usual were eye-openers as regards basketball but were thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators.
