BASKETBALL
KURUNGAITUKU TROPHY WHAKATANE A NARROWLY DEFEATED The Whakatane A and B Club teams had many victories at the Rotorua Basketball Tournament when they defeated teams from all parts of the North Island. Fortytwo teams entered for the tournament and these were played off in A and B grade sections. The games were fast and spectacular some ending dramatically with one goal separating the teams. Most teams taking part in the tournament were representatives and Whakatane is to be congratulated on its high standard of play.
Whakatane A was successful in reaching the A Grade Finals when they were defeated by Tauranga by 24 goals to 13 after a brilliant game. This game drew a record gallery but the combination of the Tauranga team proved superior to Whakatane. The score at half-time was 11—6. Support was lacking from the Whakatane goalers, there being very little combination in this department. The positional play of the defence and the centres was pleasing to watch. _ For Whakatane Shirley Howat, Ina Quigg and Joan Bluett (defence) excelled themselves with their interception and attack, thus saving Whakatane from having more goals scored against them. At the conclusion of the match, the Lady Wavertree, patroness of the Rotorua Basketball Association, presented the Whakatane team with the “Maggie Papakura” Carved Trophy for runners-up in the A Grade Section.
The teams representing Whakatane were:—J. Howat, N. Kenyon, M. Grant, M. Howat (capt.), B. Armstrong, J. Ching, S. Howat, J. Bluett and I. Quigg. B Team; D. Stewart (Capt.), N. Rivett, P.
