Climate Contrasts The contrast between the climate of England and New Zealand was the first thing commented on by Squadron-Leader L. H. Trent, V.C., D.F.C., when interviewed aboard the Akaroa. “I like England and the English people very much, but I still can’t forgive them their climate,” he said. “You certainly have turned on a good day for us. Thank goodness you have, because I have been cracking up the New Zealand weather throughout the voyage. A day like this has just sold the country.”
Use For Old Wire Rope Unusual cargo unloaded from the Kaimiro at Greymouth recently was 75 tons of 5-Bin. wire rope in seemingly hopeless tangles. New the rope would be valued at £12,000 at today’s prices. In the war years the rope lay deep in the Auckland harbour as part of the anti-submarine and anti-torpedo defences of the port, and is now rusted and kinked beyond salvage for industrial purposes. The rope in 25 bundles each of three tons has been brought to the West Coast by the Public Works Department for use in connection with river control work.
Sugar For Marmalade
The annual release of three pounds of sugar per head for marmalade making has been announced by the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. Coupon YlB on sheet three of the ration book will be valid for the purchase of three pounds of sugar from September 1 to October 31, states a Press Association message from Wellington. The Minister said he would have liked to make an earlier release of marmalade sugar, but the shortage of shipping space for raw sugar from Australia and Fiji only recently had been overcome. As time would be required to build up stocks of refined sugar in-some districts, the Minister advised those who could to delay redeeming their coupons until October.
