LOCAL COMPETITORS

HAMILTON VICTORY COMPETITIONS

The dancing section of the Hamilton Musical Festival attracted three young entrants from the Whakatane district, namely Heather Mitai and Rebecca Terenyra of Matata, and Janice Bell, of Whakatane. All three did very well indeed, and the remarks placed by the judge on the award sheets were very encouraging. Heather Mtiai entered for the Highland Fling, the Sean Trubhais, Sword Dance, Sailors Hornpipe, and Irish Jig in the ‘9 and under 12’ class, and in the Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Sailors Hornpipe and Irish Jig in the ‘open’ class. The remarks- of the judge were complimentary, and more than once the opinion was expressed that with hard work, she would be an excellent dancer, and that she was at present doing very god work. The other lassie from Matata, Rebecca Terenyra, entered for the Highland Fling, Sean Trubhais, Sailors Hornpipe and Irish Jig in the section ‘under 9 years.’ The judge described her dancing as very good, and added a number of encouraging remarks. Janice Bell, of Whakatane, entered in the same classes as Heather Mitai, and also acquitted herself very well. - The judge commented several times on her good footwork. All three contestants gained marks which averaged at eighty per cent., and must congratulated on their splendid performance.
