STUDIO CHATTER
A FEATURE COLUMN FUTURE HIGHLIGHTS Unusual Occupation Cass Daley’s unusual occupation of restoring and collecting antique furniture dating back to Revolutionary days is being filmed by Jerry Fairbanks as a-forthcoming “Unusual Occupations” short. Historical Interior A full-scale interior of Old Bailey, London’s historical criminal court, was used by director Lewis Allen for trial scenes in Paramount’s “The Imperfect Lady”, starring Teresa Wright and Ray Milland.
Grown Up Hollywood is looking up to Jane Withers as an actress. The former child star is soon to celebrate her 20th birthday and has been given her first dramatic leading lady’s role in Paramount’s “Danger Street.”
Homicide Queen Lovely. Barbara Stanwyck is the recognised screen homicide Queen. She indeed has a dastardly record. In “Double Indemnity” she murders a woman, marries . the widower, helps Fred Mac Murray murder him, and then tries to murder Fred. In “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers,” she murders her aunt, causes a man to be executed, twice tries to murder Van Heflin, then tries to persuade Van to murder her husband. Nice person! “I’ve Heard That Voice Before!” Bing Crosby’s voice is heard throughout a picture in which he does not even appear. The picture is Paramount’s “Out Of This World.” It seems that the script writers had created a character whose voice was supposed to be similar to Bing’s. Eddie Bracken was selected for the part, and Bing offered to do the singing behind the scenes. When the main title billing of the picture is flashed on the screen, Bing’s credit is hidden in the following words : “Mr Bracken’s songs are sung for him by an old friend of his—and yours!”
REGENT FEATURE RELEASES September and October at the Regent Theatre, are marked by a number of feature releases. During the present month, the highest attractions include “To Have And Have Not” starring Humphrey Bogart, and also “Son of Lassie,” a dramatic tale even more stirring than “Lassie Come Home.” A peep at the October calendar shows “Valley of Decision” with Greer Garson and Gregory Peck, and “Thrill of a Romance” (Van Johnson and Esther Williams). Another treat in store is “Bandit of Sherwood Forest” (Robin Hood and his Merry Men), which is at present showing at the Civic, Auckland. But more about these later. The above should be sufficient to make any theatre patron draw breath in anticipation.
