MAORIS AND BEER
TALE OF TWELVE BOTTLES PREPARATIONS FOR PARTY When two members of the local police force intercepted a group of Maoris in Clifton Road on the Saturday night of June 29 last, they were surprised to see one of them drop a white parcel on the roadside and run. Upon investigation, the parcel was found to contain twelve bottles of amber liquid. Upon searching another member of the party, he was also found to be carrying a similar parcel. The nett result, was that James Maxwell and Reginald Moeke faced the Magistrate at yesterday’s court sitting, and pleaded guilty to having assisted some person unknown in the commission of an offence viz. the supplying of the liquor concerned. The excuse offered was that the two defendants were preparing for a party to welcome a Maori soldier on leave from Papakura. Unfortunately, the Magistrate could not enter into the same convivial spirit, and severely reprimanding both delinquents, imposed fines of £2 and costs amounting to 22/- each.
