LIQUOR SUPPLIED
MAORI WOMEN INVOLVED INCIDENT AT TE TEKO Apparently what was intended to be a private little beer party between accused, James Walker, and two Maori girls at Te Teko on July 13 last came to an abrupt end when the police entered, names were taken, and the beer confiscated. The sequel took place in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when, through his counsel, Mr C. A. Suckling, Walker pleaded guilty to two charges of supplying female Maoris with liquor. Sergeant Farrell described how accused ..was discovered in a shed at Te. Teko, amidst several empty beer bottles. .When tackled with the offence, he offered as an excuse the •ffict that he was a South Island Maori and was not aware of the liquor laws.
Accused was fined £5 on each count with costs totalling 30/-. The two Maori girls concerned, Rosie Taylor and Muriel Schooner, were both charged with assisting in the commission of an offence. Mr Suckling, who again defended, pleaded guilty in both cases, and stated that both defendants realised that they had been very foolish.
Fines of £2 and costs 27/- were inflicted in both cases.
