“This sort of thing is causing considerable concern in the town,” said Sergeant Farrell when a middleaged Maori, George Schooner, appeared in answer to a charge of casting offensive matter on the pavement of the western Strand. The incident, said Sergeant Farrell, took place about 10.30 p.m., when there were quite a number of people about. A fine of £3 and costs (27/-) was imposed. Excessive Speed For operating a heavy motor vehicle at a speed in excess of 30 m.p.h. William Robert Dick was fined £2 and costs 25/6 in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday. County Inspector Carling -said that he had checked his speed at 44 m.p.h. when defendant, who was an employee of the P.W.D. gave as his excuse, his desire to get to his work as quickly as possible.
Straying Horses Being the owner of several horses which were found at large on the Paroa road on July 18 last, cost V. A. D. Nathan the sum of £3 and costs (33/6), when the case was brought before the Magistrate at yesterday’s court sitting. The County Traffic Inspector (Mr C. A. Carling) added the interesting observation that three days prior to the offence, defendant’s same horses had been impounded at Edgecumbe, and released by him.
