PAROA’S GOOD WIN

PAENGAROA-PUKEHINA DEFEATED

The teams lined out as under:— Paengaroa-Pukehina (yellow and black): I. Spratt, Ball, J. Reid, Mortensen, Hickson, Gordon, Dodds, Fea, Ross, Walters, Hughes, Treloar, J. Reid, Williams, Luxford. Paroa (black): Laurie, Tai Riini, E. Hohapata, Butler, Goodwin, T. Riini, Goldsmith, Simpson, Wahaponga, Awa, Dodd, Cleland, Nathan, Wharewera, Hona. Paroa asserted itself in the light play the heavier black pack making good headway, the yellow backs were however a good combination and marking was excellent. The first try for Paroa came from Hona who crossed after a short sprint. Dodds kick at goal failed. Shortly afterwards Goldsmith made a brilliant run through the opposition and scored in a promising position.. Riini’s kick missed narrowly. The yellow jerseys now seemed to have found their feet but whenever the black backs handled they were dangerous. One of these initiated by Goldsmith sent Goodwin away. This player ran from halfway and scored near the upright. Dodds failed to convert.

The score at half-time was Paroa 9, Paengaroa-Pukehina 0.

The visitors showed to much better advantage in the second half. Spratt continued to play his safe game at full and the forwards led by I. Reid and Luxford invaded consistently. Mortensen missed narrowly with a penalty award but the yellows kept going and initiated a dribbling rush which was only stopped on the goal line. In a perfect position Paroa was penalised and Williams took a careful shot which however failed' to rise.

Cleland went through in a solo drive but again the yellow pack returned with Walters and Treloar in the van. Spratt’s line kicking was magnificent. Hickson sent the yellow backs away and a score seemed certain. It was a case of too many hands however and the chance was lost.

Paroa attacked in the concluding stages and as the backs slung the leather around the defence of the visitors cracked again and Tai Riini

slipped over in the corner. Dodds’ kick from an acute angle missed. Goodwin figured in the next move which only broke down on the line itself. The game ended with the score: Paroa 12, Paengaroa-Pukehina 0. Mr F. Peebles was referee.
