LAST NIGHT’S DELUGE
NEARLY 3 h INCHES OF RAIN WIDESPREAD MINOR FLOODING The heavy rain which fell almost without interruption last night resulted in 3.40 inches being recorded in Whakatane and 2.24 inches on the Rangitaiki. Surface water is widespread over the county but there are no cases of rivers or streams overflowing and causing floods.
In the Borough, the Wainui-te-Whara is again bank high, but the Wairere is well confined to its, bed, due mainly to the timely operations of the drag-line dredge which has, been operating last week. The basin at the rear of Allandale is again under water, Alexander Avenue at the junction with Douglas Street being several feet deep at its deepest place. This road is impassable and a number of cottages, several of them recently erected are entirely surrounded. ’ .
With more rain impending settlers and residents are warned: to keep a sharp lookout for more serious floods.
