CALEDONIANISM

OPOTIKI SOCIETY FORMED SISTER GROUP TO WHAKATANE At a particularly well-attended meeting last Tuesday, Opotiki residents of Scottish inclination decided unanimously to form the first Caledonian Society in that town. The meeting was remarkable for the number of true Heilan-mon present as well as a .fair sassanach sprinkling from ayont the Tweed.

Chief W. J. Simons of the Whakatane Society, attended together with Mr W. G. Hurst, the secretary, and both addressed the meeting at some length on the aims and objectives of Caledonianism. The fostering of Scottish tradition and the creation of public interest in National Dancing, Piping and Scottish history were the main features of a Society said Chief Simons, who went to some length to sketch the set-up of the Whakatane organisation.

The Opotiki ‘Scots’ proved most enthusiastic and the decision to form a local Society' was quickly arrived at. The installation of officers Chief, Mr D. Croall; Chieftains, Messrs. W. Neil and W. McDonald; and the Secretary, Mr R. D. Andrews. A provisional committee was also set up with instructions to go into the matter of a constitution and to formulate a social programme.
