The Canterbury jumper, Gay Fort, by Broiefort —Going Gay, was the medium of a great betting plunge for the Australian Steeplechase last week, being backed to win £70,000. Many wagers of £IOOO to £2OOO were written, but the gallant bay failed to run into a place. Maybe the pencillers are ready for another optimistic move on the part of New Zealand sportsmen. A Matamata Acquisition At a Christchurch sale of thoroughbreds the brood mare, Chiding, by Mysotis (Imp)—Chidden, was secured by Mr J. Clothier of Matamata, at 320 guineas. A Big Offer Declined Last week an offer of 2500 guineas was refused for Desert Fox by Foxbridge—Oranoa by Tiderace from Oreum by King John—Desert Gold. He is owned by Mr T. C. Lowry, of Hawke’s Bay, and by sportsmen who have inspected him and he is very highly assessed. Winterset for N.Z.

Australia’s champion steeplechaser the 12 year old Winterset, is likely to compete in this Dominion’s principal cross country events this season. He has won on the flat, over hurdles and the major obstacles, and to date is the winner of £1,033 in stakes. It is considered the Grand National Steeples at Riccarton with the maximum 12.7 would suit Winterset admirably. Doubtless the attendance of the public would be materially increased with the champion jumper an additional attraction.
