Increased stakes have been allotted for the Avondale Spring Meeting to be held on September 7 and 14. The Avondale Cup will be worth £1750.
Tangore for Sydney The four year old Golden Eagle— Ruling Spi gelding, Tangore, raced in this Dominion for Mr F. H. Mehta of Bombay, India, has been purchased by Mr A. Morisby, of Sydney, and will be shipped to his new home this week. As a three year old he won the Beaufort Handicap at Riccarton. defeating a good field.
Karachi Speedy The Te Aroha bred Nizami—Sharwin gelding, Karachi, now owned by a Hawke’s Bay sportsman, has evidently wintered well and as a three year old should win his share of races. That he is possessed of speed he has been proving at Riccarton lately by skipping over four furlong dashes in 48 4-ssecs.
High Grade Hurdlers It is now a matter of history that the A. Winder stable at Te Rapa ranks decidedly high with its front rank hurdlers. With Mr W. S. Goosman’s Town Survey in 1943 it won the Great Northern, Wellington and Grand National Hurdles in the one season, a feat never before registered. In the last few weeks the owner-trainer of Bramble Song has won the Great Northern and Grand National Hurdles, but unfortunately for ‘ the stable there will be no Wellington Steeplechase this year, so Bramble Song will not be able to emulate the deeds of his stable companion, Town Survey.
Lord Barwon On his arrival in Australia a few weeks ago Barwon, now named Lord Barwon, was highly praised by a Melbourne veterinary surgeon, who considered him a remarkably fine individual. Since then, however, the colt has been troubled with soreness, and as the tracks are well on the hard side, track watchers have not been able to enthuse over his galloping capabilities. Interest will be taken by New Zealand sportsmen in how he shapes on August 31 in the Hobartville Stakes of seven furlongs.
The 3000 Guineas Equator One of the finest colts seen in Auckland in recent years, a member of F. W. McCabe’s team, is Equator by Neptune from Lady Zephyr. As a yearling he realised 3000 guineas at the National Sale.
An English Purchase At the Newmarket Sale Mr J. C. Fletcher, of Auckland, purchased a yearling colt by Casanova for 2000 guineas. He may, in due course, be put into training in England for his new owner, and later brought to this Dominion.
An Early Selection The Palmerston North jumper, Beneve, by Lord Quex—Rose d’Or who has just registered three successive wins, is already being selected to win next year’s Grand National Hurdles.
