ARE ROOKS GOOD OR BAD?

DIVIDED OPINION CENSUS NEARING COMPLETION After two years the great rook census started by the British Ministry of Agriculture is nearing completion, and the controversy which has puzzled country-folk for centuries —is the rook the farmer’s friend or foe?—will be settled without any doubt for future generations. Now the job of sorting out the evidence which will mean either life or death to Britain’s rooks has begun and by the end of July the verdict is expected. At this stage the welter of evidence seems to be in favour of the rook. “For years opinion has been torn on this question,” said an official of the Agricultural Research Council. “Farmers in some ports of the country swear the rook does more harm than good, in other parts opinion is the exact opposite. “This is due to the fact that rooks, of all birds, have extremely mixed feeding habits. One rook on being shot will be found to be full of corn another full of wire-worm.”
