“There’s no accounting for tastes” remarks a well known physician in writing to a London medical publication, “but strange as it seems, many old smokers prefer a foul pipe, and foul pipes, be it noted, may do a great deal of mischief, because they are often so saturated with nicotine (poisonous stuff!) that it’s unsafe to use them.” The same authority might have added that the commonest cause of pipes fouling quickly is the constant use of tobacco heavily charged with nicotine, as so many brands in everyday use undoubtedly are. But smokers often discover this when it’s too late. The safe and sure way is to smoke “toasted,” for owing to the toasting of the leaf (by the manufacturers’ unique process) the nicotine -is largely expelled, and the five popular brands—Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Pocket Edition, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold—are left pure, sweet, and fragrant. Once a smoker takes to toasted, its usually for life.
